Annotations for Jamie muscato and carrie hope fletcher freeze your brain

Lyric: Each store is the same
Annotation:
The constant of a 7-11 no matter where J.D. goes is the last bit of structure in his life

Lyric: Care for a hit?
Annotation:
‘Care for a hit?’ Is commonly used referring to drugs and/or alcohol.

Lyric: When mom was alive
Annotation:
Immediately after J.D. sings this line, Veronica can be seen cringing. Clearly she didn’t expect her lighthearted teasing to suddenly lead to J.D. briefly venting about how much better his life was before his mom died.

Lyric: Linoleum aisles that I love
 To get lost in
Annotation:
this could mean that J.D loves to get lost in a 7-eleven and be surrounded by slushies rather than return home to his dad

Lyric: Try it
Annotation:
This line is spoken almost… menacingly. This shows to JD’s unstable nature, and foreshadowing later events.

Lyric: Veronica Sawyer
Annotation:
Earlier in the song, J.D. sings “I don’t learn the names, don’t bother with faces” yet he seemingly contradicts himself with this line. By knowing her name, he is showing her that she’s managed to change him, and that he has grown to care for her.

Lyric: Freeze your brain
 Shatter your skull
 Fight pain with more pain
 Forget who you are
 Unburden your load
 Forget in six weeks
You’ll be back on the road
When the voice in your head
 Says you’re better off dead
 Don’t open a vein
Annotation:
JD’s unstable side comes out for a bit, showing his slightly insane tactics, and that he has a lot of problems in his life. He’s trying to fight fire with fire, and it’ll just burn him to ashes.

Lyric: Freeze your brain
 Suck on that straw
 Get lost in the pain
 Happiness comes
 When everything numbs
 Who needs cocaine?
Annotation:
JD is comparing brain freezes and slushies to drugs, like the aforementioned cocaine, saying that he can only get his happiness from said slushies and brain freezes. They give him comfort and help numb the pain of his past and mind, making him feel normal.

Lyric: All I can trust is this concrete oasis
Annotation:
The 7-Eleven is the one constant thing in J.D.’s life. It’s what many psychologists would call a “negative coping mechanism.” So far, J.D.’s comfort he finds in his various 7-Elevens have kept him from reaching his breaking point. (In the movie, it’s a Snappy Snack Shack- a fictional chain.)
He enjoys the 7-11 because it’s a constant. It’s something that never changes no matter where he goes, and he feels like it’s the only thing he can trust not to change. His environment, his house, his school and many other things change on a monthly basis. The 7-11 stays the same, and he feels he can rely on solely that.
The reason why JD loves the 7-11, is because after years of moving around and having to adjust all the time, the store is a constant (as we get to know more in the next few lines).

Lyric: Does your mommy know you eat all that crap?
Annotation:
Veronica only means a light teasing here, but it prompts J.D. to reveal part of the truth about his mother.

Lyric: I pray at my altar of slush;
Annotation:
Later in the show, J.D. tells Veronica that he worships her. Comparing 7-Eleven to a church is a perfect symbol for what J.D. believes in; It’s his only comfort, and it’s practically his religion. J.D. sings this line passionately, demonstrating how it’s hardly an exaggeration.
